Knowing about AI is one thing; having it ready at your fingertips is another. In this lesson, we will set up your “Command Center.” By the time you finish this page, you will be able to summon AI on any website with a single click.
Step 1: The Essentials (Account Setup)
First, you need to open your “Big Three” accounts. Most of these have excellent free tiers that are more than enough for this course.
OpenAI (ChatGPT): Go to chat.openai.com. Sign up with your email.
Pro Tip: Download the mobile app! The “Voice Mode” is incredible for hands-free brainstorming while driving or cooking.
Anthropic (Claude): Go to claude.ai.
Why? You’ll want this for long documents and high-quality writing tasks.
Google Gemini: Go to gemini.google.com.
Why? This is already connected to your Google Drive and Docs.
Step 2: The “Super-Power” Browser Extensions
To be truly productive, you shouldn’t have to keep switching tabs to find AI. We are going to bring AI to you.
I recommend installing these three free Chrome/Edge extensions:
1. Perplexity AI (The Search Killer)
Perplexity is like a mix between Google and a librarian. When you search for something, it gives you a written answer with citations (links to sources).
Install it: Perplexity Chrome Extension
Use Case: Fact-checking and deep research without clicking 10 different blue links.
2. Harpa AI (The Browser Assistant)
Harpa is a “Sidebar” AI. You can press a shortcut (like Alt + A), and it pops up on the side of any website you are visiting.
Install it: Harpa.ai
Use Case: Ask it to “Summarize this long article” or “Extract the prices from this page into a table.”
3. Grammarly AI (The Writing Coach)
Grammarly has evolved. It’s no longer just for spelling; it now suggests ways to rewrite entire sentences to sound more professional or friendly.
Install it: Grammarly for Chrome
Use Case: Drafting perfect emails in Gmail or Outlook without “Writer’s Block.”
Step 3: Privacy & Safety Checklist
Before we move to Section 2, let’s establish three “Golden Rules” for your AI safety:
Rule #1: No Secrets. Never type sensitive passwords, private health data, or confidential company trade secrets into a public AI.
Rule #2: Verify Everything. AI is a “confident liar.” If it gives you a legal fact or a medical tip, double-check it.
Rule #3: Human-in-the-loop. Use AI to draft, but you are the final editor. Never hit “Send” without reading what the AI wrote.
