In our last lesson, we learned the R-T-C framework. Now, we are going to learn how to give the AI “examples” to follow. This is the difference between an AI that sounds like a robot and an AI that sounds exactly like you.
In the world of AI, these are called “Shots.”
1. Zero-Shot Prompting (The “Guessing” Method)
Zero-Shot is when you give the AI a task with zero examples. You are relying entirely on the AI’s internal knowledge to guess what you want.
Example: “Write a product description for a handmade coffee mug.”
Result: The AI will write a generic description. It might be good, but it won’t know your specific style or tone.
When to use it: For simple tasks, quick facts, or when you are just brainstorming and don’t care about a specific format.
2. Few-Shot Prompting (The “Show & Tell” Method)
Few-Shot is when you give the AI a few examples of what a “good” result looks like before asking it to do the work. This is the secret to getting perfect formatting and tone.
How to do it:
Instead of just asking for a result, provide 2 or 3 examples first.
The Pro Prompt Example:
“I want you to write a YouTube video title for me. Here are three examples of titles I liked in the past:
How I Saved 10 Hours a Week Using AI.
The Secret Tool 99% of Designers Ignore.
Stop Using Google Search—Do This Instead.
Now, write a title for a video about ‘Learning to cook at home’.“
The Result: The AI will notice that your titles are punchy, benefit-driven, and use “hooks.” It will give you a title like: “Stop Ordering Takeout—Master Home Cooking in 5 Steps.”
Why “Few-Shot” is a Game Changer
Humans learn by example, and so does AI. Use Few-Shot prompting when:
Writing Emails: Give it two emails you’ve written in the past so it learns your “voice.”
Data Formatting: Show it how you want a list organized (e.g., “Name [Date] – Task”).
Social Media: Provide 3 of your most successful Instagram captions so it can copy the vibe.
Student Activity: The Style Mimic
Find an old email or text message you wrote that sounds exactly like “you.”
Go to your AI (ChatGPT or Claude).
Type: “Here is an example of my writing style: [Paste your text]. Now, using that same tone and style, write a short thank-you note to a colleague for helping with a project.”
See how much more “human” the response feels compared to a standard prompt.
